Effective Steps to Get Rid of Lice

Lice may be a harmless nuisance, but if you don’t take immediate action when you first notice them, you could be putting other people at risk. If not handled properly at the first site of infestation, it could put other people at risk who are nearby. All it takes is one egg or (nit), and you could have lice multiplying for months.

Here are some steps to follow if you or a loved one have picked up lice. These tips will not only help you terminate lice and their eggs, but also save you time, money and endless itching.

Over-the-Counter Treatment

A common and effective first step for many people is finding a treatment shampoo. The right shampoo can have almost immediate results. Chances are, you will likely need to wash your, or you child’s, hair twice a day with the chosen treatment to prevent lice from coming back.

Be aware of the product that you intend to use. Ingredients matter, especially if you are planning to use the product on a small child. You do not want to use a treatment that is going to be toxic for you or your child.

If your doctor has given you a prescription medication, ask about potential reactions and side effects. There have been reports of allergic reactions or scalp injuries by not properly using the treatment.

Don’t Share Hats or Combs

Sharing hats or combs with friends and family can seem harmless, but if a loved one has lice, you could be facing an embarrassing problem. Lice can hide in combs or brushes, hats and headwear like bike helmets, headbands, and beanies. If you were to use any of those items from someone with lice, you risk lice moving into your hair.

Lice are two to three millimeters long and are difficult to identify on a hat or comb. Prevent the spread of lice by washing hats thoroughly after using them. Rinse your combs with hot water and keep them in a Ziploc bag.

Spray Clothing and Bedding with Lice Protecting Spray

You can find these scented sprays both over the counter and by speaking to a doctor. The sprays should be used on clothing, hair, headphones and anything that touches your hair.

Bedding and pillows are other items to spray and wash thoroughly. Many times people have gotten rid of lice from their hair but shortly got them again because they did not wash and spray down their clothes and bedding.
